Supporting Women in Difficult Times

Dear GCC Community,
In this very moment, we find ourselves at a crossroads in history — one that has shaken the core of bodily autonomy and human dignity. The recent overturning of Roe v. Wade has sent a chilling message across our nation: the right to choose — a fundamental freedom long fought for — is no longer guaranteed for millions of women in America.
As Co-Founder and President of the Gresham Community Center (GCC), I cannot remain silent. This decision will have a devastating impact on the lives of women, especially those who have historically been left without a voice — low-income women, young women, women of color, and those in rural and underserved areas. For many, this ruling isn't just about choice. It’s about survival.
Here in Chicago and across Illinois, we are fortunate to have courageous leaders who have ensured our state remains a safe haven for reproductive rights. I want to express my sincere gratitude to our local and state officials who have stood firm in defending a woman’s right to choose. Their actions are a beacon of hope in a time when hope is desperately needed.
I would also like to extend heartfelt thanks to Senator Dick Durbin for his ongoing leadership in the U.S. Senate and for the powerful and inspiring video message he shared with us during our recent Women’s Symposium. His words — and more importantly, his actions — reaffirm that the voices of Illinois residents are being heard at the highest levels of government.
A special thank you to Billie Ammons, who led GCC's Women’s Symposium with unmatched dedication and care. Her tireless work on this cause — and so many others — continues to inspire and uplift our entire community. We are deeply grateful for her leadership and her passion for justice.
But our duty doesn’t stop at our state borders. We must now stand not only for the women of Illinois but also for those across the country who no longer have the protections we do. We must organize, support, educate, and uplift in their honor. We must offer sanctuary and solidarity. Whether through advocacy, donations, volunteering, or simply spreading awareness, the responsibility to protect women’s rights is a shared one.
To the women feeling afraid, angry, or uncertain: GCC stands with you. We will continue to be a place of safety, empowerment, and unwavering support. The fight is not over. And together, we will not just endure — we will win.
With Purpose and Solidarity,
Dwayne Williams Jr.
